G.R.O.W.E.R.S. @ Greenbrier offers a multi-path approach to providing horticultural education, employment opportunities and therapy for adults with developmental and physical disabilities.
The program seeks to enrich the lives of our students through teaching the horticulture and life skills at the community-based, historic greenhouse complex at Edgerton Park. As they learn these skills they are assigned specific tasks that have to be completed on a daily basis. These tasks help them learn responsibility through the care of the plants, grounds, and animals in and around the greenhouse. They learn the proper way to interact with not only each other and the staff but with the public as well as patrons who come through to enjoy the park grounds and purchase plants and other horticulture products that we offer.
The participants attend classes that are taught by our knowledgable staff. Subjects include plant identification and care, seeding, and how to root cuttings and raise plants. The plants they raise are either sold to the community or used within the program as each participant raises a garden plot in the Community Garden that is operated on the grounds of Edgerton Park.
As their knowledge grows, the plants that the participants raise and take care of grow and produce fruit, vegetables and flowers. As they interact with the public and watch as their plants are purchased, their sense of purpose and self esteem grow.
